Everybody’s Talkin’ ‘Bout… Colon Health
The Colon, people are starting to talk about it. The colon has been a neglected part of our bodies for a very long time. Often people do not want to talk about it, research it, or have their colon’s looked at by a doctor. It’s the place that makes your bowel movements and it has a dirty, smelly, gross connotation because of that. And it is dirty, smelly and gross, but it’s also an extremely important part of the digestion system and to neglect it can cause some serious health issues. Colon cancer is one of the most severe, but if the colon is not healthy constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease and colon polyps, among others, can be the result.
What in the world does the colon do? Well… the colon, or the large intestine, is the final step that our food travels before we eliminate it. The main function of the colon is to absorb the left over water in the waste that comes to it from the small intestine. Absorbing the water brings some beneficial elements to our bodies and allows the colon to condense the waste into a solid form to release from our bodies, in other words, the making of a bowel movement.
If the colon is not healthy, it can either not absorb enough water (diarrhea), absorb too much water (constipation), or it can absorb harmful toxins from the over processed, unhealthy food that we eat. Toxins that get absorbed can lead to some of the harmful diseases mentioned above as does waste that lingers too long in the colon (constipation) or is eliminated before the colon has time to absorb the water (diarrhea).
There are many natural ways to start increasing the health of you colon. Eliminating or cutting back on some foods that are very toxic for the colon, like alcohol, caffeine, meats like bacon or sausage, and deep fried food, can begin the healing process of years of colon abuse. Drinking lots of water, local or organic fruits and vegetables and good proteins (like almonds) can help to promote a healthy colon.
